Yahoo To Kickoff Mobile World Cup App

A deal between major World Cup sponsor Yahoo and mobile application developer Everypoint will provide real-time information about the competition this summer.

For world football/soccer fans, the four years between World Cups is nowhere near as long as the period of time being away from a TV or a computer while one's team is playing. To help footy-mad fans keep track of the 2006 World Cup in Germany (which Italy is going to win, just so you know), Yahoo will launch Mobile MatchCast.

Privately held Everypoint will develop the application for Yahoo. Visitors to Yahoo's World Cup site can download the application to their mobile phones once it becomes available.

"Nothing can beat experiencing every exciting moment of all the big matches as they unfold in real-time. We are excited to deliver real-time mobile applications with crisp graphics directly to fans' mobile phones," Christian Lindholm, Vice President, Global Mobile Products, Yahoo!, said in a statement.

The application will run on virtually any Java-equipped new mobile phone, the companies said. Eveypoint uses a content delivery push technology that will place real-time match information, schedules, scores and up-to-the-second commentary to phones running Mobile MatchCast.

The World Cup begins June 9 with host Germany facing Costa Rica in Munich, and Poland versus Ecuador at Gelsenkirchen. Italy's first match will be June 12th against Ghana in Hanover, while Team USA faces the Czech Republic the same day in Gelsenkirchen.
